Mayor Smith invites Mesa residents to serve on King Day

Mayor Scott Smith today issued a call to all Mesa citizens to volunteer their time and talents on the annual Mesa Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, Saturday, Jan. 16, 2010.

“This is an opportunity for all Mesa residents to join together in the spirit of Dr. King’s legacy to help better our community through service,” Mayor Smith said.  “I ask all of our residents to join me in rolling up our sleeves to work together to tackle the problems facing our City.”

There are many ways to volunteer by either participating in a onetime event or through an ongoing opportunity. Volunteers are needed for City libraries, art center, museums, parks, public safety and many other areas.

One of the service opportunities happening on Jan. 16 is a project in partnership with HandsOn Greater Phoenix.  Volunteers will paint homes located in the area of Broadway and Mesa Drive.

For more information on this and other service opportunities, call (480) 644-3705 or log on to www.mesaaz.gov/volunteer/.
