The City of Mesa Office of Diversity, City of Mesa Human Relations Advisory Board, Mesa Arts Center, ITVS Community Cinema and Eight Arizona PBS present “Community Cinema,” a monthly series of free movies through May, along with post-show discussions.
The first new film of the year is “Daisy Bates: First Lady of Little Rock,” which will be shown on Thursday, Jan. 19 at 6 p.m. at the Mesa Arts Center’s Dobson Lecture Hall. Daisy Bates was a complex, unconventional and largely forgotten heroine of the civil rights movement who led the charge to desegregate the all-white Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1957.
Following the screening, there will be a half hour discussion featuring John Goodie, a pioneer member of the Mesa Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Committee which began in 1988. Mr. Goodie also founded Concerned Citizens of Mesa which initiated a campaign to create a MLK holiday. Proposition 408, which established Martin Luther King Jr./Civil Rights Day as a paid municipal holiday, was approved by 52 percent of the Mesa voters in November 1996. For information about this year’s MLK events, visit www.mesamlk.org.
A free film screening will take place on the third Thursday each month through May. For more information, visit www.mesaaz.gov/diversity.
